The United States economy was severely impacted by the local housing crisis which started in 2008. As a result, the local economy contracted by 0.4% in 2008 and 3.5% in 2009. Economic growth recovered strongly in 2010 to reach 3.0% before dropping off to 1.8% in 2011. Growth of 2.1% is expected in 2012. The Dow Jones Industrial average (DJIA) is an index of the top 30 publicly-owned companies based in the United States. This index outperformed global markets during the review period, declining by 8.6% compared to the 22% decline for the MSCI world index.
