In his new role, Aquilina will lead the coverage and new business development for some of the bank’s key clients across the emerging markets.
Aquilina will report to Paul Raphael, head of global emerging markets at the wealth management unit, and will be based in Zurich.
Aquilina joins UBS from Barclays Wealth, where he most recently was vice chairman at the wealth management division.
At the end of March, UBS managed approximately $157bn in assets for customers domiciled in Latin America, Middle East, Africa, central and eastern Europe.
