GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, has revealed its league tables for top 10 financial and legal advisers by value and volume in financial services sector for Q1 2022.
A total of 926 merger and acquisition (M&A) deals worth $96.4bn were announced in the sector during Q1 2022.
Top financial advisers by value and volume
According to GlobalData’s ‘Global and Financial Services M&A Report Financial Adviser League Tables Q1 2022’, Morgan Stanley and Ernst & Young have secured the top spots by value and volume, respectively, in the financial services sector in Q1 2022.
Morgan Stanley achieved the top ranking by value by advising on $25.9bn worth of M&A deals, while Ernst & Young led by volume, having advised on a total of 16 deals.
GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Ernst & Young, despite topping the chart by volume, lagged behind its peers in terms of value and did not feature in the top 10 list by value.
“On the other hand, Morgan Stanley, despite advising on a fewer number of deals, managed to top the ranking by value due to its involvement in big-ticket deals. The firm advised on four billion-dollar deals that also included one deal valued more than $10bn.”

By GlobalDataAccording to the financial deals database of GlobalData, the other high rankers by value included JP Morgan, with deals worth $24.4bn; Goldman Sachs, with $22.1bn; TD Securities, with $13.8bn; and Credit Suisse, with $5.8bn.
In terms of volume, Stifel/KBW occupied the second position, with 14 deals; followed by Piper Sandler, with 12 deals; JP Morgan, with 11 deals and Houlihan Lokey with 11 deals.
Top legal advisers by value and volume
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and Kirkland & Ellis have secured the top spots by value and volume, respectively.
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett achieved the top ranking by value by advising on $25.2bn worth of M&A deals, while Kirkland & Ellis led by volume, having advised on a total of 15 deals, according to GlobalData’s ‘Global and Financial Services M&A Report Legal Adviser League Tables Q1 2022’.
GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Simpson Thacher & Bartlett was the only adviser that managed to surpass the $20bn mark in total value, thereby outpacing its peers by a significant margin. Moreover, there was strong competition between Kirkland & Ellis and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett for the top position by volume, with the latter missing it by a whisker and instead occupying the second position. Kirkland & Ellis, apart from leading by volume, also occupied the seventh position by value.”
According to the financial deals database, the other high rankers by value included Sullivan & Cromwell, with deals worth $15.3bn; Willkie Farr & Gallagher, with $14.4bn; Torys, with $13.8bn; and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, with $12.5bn.
In terms of volume, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett occupied the second position, with 14 deals; followed by Willkie Farr & Gallagher, with 14 deals; AZB & Partners, with 10 deals; and Latham & Watkins with 10 deals.
