Rothschild’s dispute over the name of its French and Swiss units is now over, settling a long-running dispute over family name.
“The two groups have also agreed to work together to protect the family name in the banking sector. They are thereby putting a definitive end to the litigation between them, before the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris,” Rothschild said in a statement.
The dispute began in 2015, when Geneva-based Edmond de Rothschild took legal action against Paris-based Rothschild & Co, accusing the latter of creating confusion through use of the Rothschild name alone.
The businesses have now signed an agreement, which restricts them from using the Rothschild brand by itself.
Under the agreement, Edmond de Rothschild Group will operate under its existing name while the Rothschild & Co Group will also retain its corporate brand.
However, Rothschild & Co’s private banking and asset management operations in France, Belgium and Monaco will operate under the name Rothschild Martin Maurel.
