London-based law firm Reed Smith has added Joe Kohler to its Financial Industry Group.

Kohler joins Reed Smith from Deutsche Bank where he was managing director, legal, corporate & investment banking. In that role, he co-led the bank’s sales and trading legal function globally. he also obtained transactional experience across the fixed income, currencies and commodities businesses.

Over his 18-year career at Deutsche Bank, Kohler led the legal work on much of the bank’s transactions. He worked on the bank’s legal responses to counterparty defaults, downgrades and worked on enforcement and asset recovery efforts during the 2008 credit crisis.

In addition, he worked on the building of the first OTC derivative clearing offerings, on the development of the related market infrastructure and contributed to trade association efforts.

Furthermore, he has experience of merger and acquisition activity in the financial sector, having led the charge on many such deals.
