Amidst the debt crisis swelling out of control, Berlusconi was forced to resign his position as Prime Minister of Italy and allow the technocratic government headed by Mario Monti, and backed by abroad bi-partisan parliamentary alliance, to take over.

Berlusconi has stated that the Monti government will get the full support of his PDL party, but that he the PDL will not support any measures that run against the line of the parties supporting him, such as the wealth tax.

However with the full backing of the left-wing parties and the labor unions, Monti’s proposed wealth tax, labor and pension reforms are expected to receive parliamentary approval.
