Jose Minaya has been named by BNY Mellon as the global head of BNY Wealth and Investments.

Minaya will begin working for the company on 3 September, reporting to Robin Vince, president, and CEO, and serving on the executive committee.

This nomination follows Hanneke Smits’ intention to retire; she will remain in her current capacity until 3 September, at which point she will shift to chair of BNY Investments until the end of 2024 to ensure a smooth transition.

Minaya transfers to BNY from Nuveen, an established international asset management company that oversees more than $1trn in assets. He was in charge of managing all worldwide operations and investing activities for Nuveen in the areas of stocks, fixed income, real estate, private markets, natural resources, alternatives, and responsible investments during his previous role as president and chief investment officer.

Moreover, he worked for AIG, Merrill Lynch, and JP Morgan for more than a decade before joining TIAA in 2004 as a fixed income portfolio manager.

In addition, he is on the boards of the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where he received his MBA, and the Manhattan College Board of Trustees.

Further, Minaya is a member of the boards of various businesses and nonprofits, such as Moody’s, the National Forest Foundation, the Investment Company Institute, and the Investment Committee of the Smithsonian Institution’s Board of Regents.

Vince stated: “I’d like to thank Hanneke for her leadership and am very pleased to welcome Jose, an investment veteran with decades of diversified experience leading a major asset manager. BNY manages money, moves it and keeps it safe, and with the global wealth segment continuing to grow rapidly, we are uniquely poised to serve clients in the segment across the entire financial lifecycle. As we unite our top 15 global asset manager and our top 10 US private bank, I believe Jose’s leadership will enable us to be more for our clients around the world.”

“I am delighted to join BNY, a historic institution with a legacy of helping clients achieve their ambitions and advancing the future of finance, and to lead a globally renowned asset management and wealth franchise with deep relationships around the world,” added Minaya.
