PBI has drawn on WealthInsight’s research to analyse a specific industry which plays a major part in driving high net worth wealth creation. This month, PBI looked at the technology and telecommunications industry in Japan, India, the United States, China and the United Kingdom.

The technology sector represents a huge investment and wealth creation opportunity for multiple regions around the world. It is also a field which entrepreneurs tend to relish. Increased internet usage is also broadening both the industry’s target market and their level of innovation.

More than ever before, technology and telecommunications is one of the most competitive industries with firms continually needing to adapt their business models in terms of cost management, products, service quality and innovation.

Despite economic uncertainties, companies are still investing in new products for large sums of money. For example, Facebook has spent more than $20 billion in acquisitions this year alone. Mr Masayoshi Son is the 10th richest person creating in the industry. In addition, between 2009 and 2013, the amount of HNWIs within technology increased by 37.2%, the largest rise of any sector in that time period.

India’s technology industry is booming in HNWIs and UHNWIs, with 14.3% and 14.7% respectively creating their wealth in the field. This is the highest of any industry in the country. It is showing no signs of slowing down either, with a 45.5% increase in HNWI volume in the sector between 2009 and 2013. Mr Mukesh Ambani, with a net worth of $23.8 billion, is the 8th richest person working in this area.

The United States is abundant with wealthy individuals exploring technology and telecommunications. China’s technology sector is rapidly increasing their value with 96% more HNWIs making their money in the field from 2008. Currently, 10.3% of HNWIs and 10.2% of UHNWIs are heavily invested in the area.
