According to GlobalData Financial Services’ most recent forecasts for retail savings and investments markets, European countries are facing tough times. Above all, political uncertainty will weigh down the overall performance of the UK’s key trading partners.
Despite a strong 2016, replicating historic growth rates for wealth generation will be much harder going forward for UK’s key trade partners, according to research from GlobalData Financial Services.
According to GlobalData Financial Services’ most recent forecasts for retail savings and investments markets, European countries are facing tough times.
The UK is one of the top three export partners for Western European countries such as Germany, Ireland, and Norway. As the future of the single market is in flux these economies face uncertain times. And weak performance within the wider economy is reflected in weaker savings growth. For instance, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of retail liquid assets in Germany exceeded 4.3% over 2012–16, but will remain stubbornly below 3% over 2017–21.
Meanwhile, Norway – despite maintaining higher growth than the rest of the continent – will be additionally impacted by low oil prices. The country exports over 20% of its crude oil to the UK, making it its largest market. After the UK exits the European single market, Norway will find it difficult to turn around its sluggish economic growth with potential customs to be paid on a sizable portion of its exports.
