Alternative asset manager Blue Owl Capital has hired former KKR executive Blake Shorthouse as its new global head of Family Capital.

Operating out of London, Shorthouse will report to Blue Owl’s institutional business global head James Clarke.

Blake joined KKR in 2014, leading Family Capital initiatives in EMEA and Asia.

Earlier, he served as the head of ultra high net worth (UHNW) EMEA at Credit Suisse and deputy global head UHNW at UBS.

Shorthouse said: “Many of Blue Owl’s first clients were Family Offices, attracted by Blue Owl’s pedigree of innovation in private markets. I’m excited to build on this strong foundation as we add new resources and capabilities to support our friends and partners in the Family Capital community.”

Blue Owl has over 250 Family Office clients and more than $6bn in equity commitments.

The company’s institutional business employs over 95 professionals in 11 offices, serving more than 900 clients. The team has garnered over $100bn in capital since its inception, with over $25bn in commitments across multiple investment platforms.

Clarke said: “We want to enhance Family Office relationships, beyond commitments to our funds, by positioning Blue Owl as an indispensable partner to the Family Capital ecosystem.

“Blake’s experience, his credibility with Single Family Offices, and his partnership first approach, will establish Blue Owl as one of the preeminent investment firms in this space.”

In January this year, Blue Owl Capital appointed Yoichi Nakamura as the managing director and head of Japan private wealth, based in Tokyo and reporting to APAC private wealth head Johann Santer.
