Banco Santander has appointed Ignacio Juliá, former CEO of ING in Spain and Portugal, as CEO of Santander Spain. Juliá will succeed Ángel Rivera on 1 October 2024, pending regulatory permissions.
His hiring will accelerate the process of changing the company’s business model to improve customer service while also spurring additional productivity and expansion.
Since 1999, when ING became the first digital bank in Spain, Juliá has played a significant role in the company’s development.
He was previously the head of retail business, the chief financial and risk officer, and the CEO of ING for Spain and Portugal since 2021. From this role, he and the CEO led the transformation of ING into a customer-centric organisation through digital channels, moving the bank away from a product-oriented one.
Juliá continued his professional development after his time in Spain, where he oversaw the retail banking division, and was named global head of retail banking at ING in 2016 and also served as global head of innovation.
Moreover, in April 2013, Rivera began working for the company as the chief of distribution for the Spanish branch network.

He is a young professional, with great experience in transformation projects similar to our own. I am convinced that his experience and profile will help us accelerate the implementation of global platforms and boost the growth of Santander Spain. I would like to thank Ángel Rivera for his contribution to the group and for his leadership in Santander Spain, which has allowed us to make great progress in building a more customer-oriented and responsible bank.”
